Alice Aletha Newman died Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at the age of 96, at Clarke County Hospital Extended Care which had been her home for many years.
She was born Aug. 3, 1921, in the rural home of her parents, Blanche Lorena (Miller) Eddy and Merlyn Wheeler Eddy. She felt blessed to be born into such a loving, caring family who remained close throughout their lives. She attended Leslie Country School along with her five brothers and sisters, frequently riding her horse to school. She graduated from Osceola High School, and continued her education at Osceola Junior College for her certificate in education/teaching. Throughout her schooling, she received many ribbons and awards at spelling bee competitions including the state level, along with ribbons from 4-H. She taught country school several years in Weldon and Groveland, and later retired as an administrative assistant from the ASCS office in Clarke County.
She married Merlin Ashby Newman on Sept. 7, 1943, and after traveling with him while he was in the service, she lived her entire life in Clarke County, making a comfortable home for her children wherever she lived. She was a loving mother and farmwife, known for her wonderful pies and beef and noodles that her family and grandson, Michael, greatly enjoyed. She also enjoyed horseback riding, especially on the trails in Missouri, and her dogs.
In addition to multiple bridge clubs, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing, reading, stitchery and music. She served as a 4-H leader and was an active participant as well as Sunday school teacher at First Christian Church in Osceola. A highlight of Aletha’s life was traveling to see her out-of-state daughters and grandson. She enjoyed the many adventures wherever she went. She particularly enjoyed her 50th wedding anniversary spent with her family in Branson, Missouri. Later, she took her family to an Arizona dude ranch as a family gift, where she and the family rode horses twice a day (she was 80 years old).
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Merlin; sister Roberta Touet and brothers, Olin and Oral Eddy.
Aletha will be missed by her children, Sandy Beck and Marcia Blain; grandson Michael (Xenia) McDaniel; great-grandson, Brandon McDaniel; sister JoAnn Marvin; brother J.D. Eddy; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family.
The family held a celebration of life gathering from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, at First Christian Church in Osceola. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Osceola Public Library, First Christian Church, Clarke County 4-H Clubs, Clarke County Animal Shelter or any charity of the donor’s choice.
